I don't recall Carol ever finding time to type in the press release (good scoop,
though!), so here's the item from the "Minnesota Scene" column in Friday's
(8/12/94) Star-Tribune:

Guentzel joins hockey staff at "U"

MIke Guentzel was named Gophers assistant hockey coach, replacing Mark
Mazzoleni, who became head coach at Miami of Ohio.

Guentzel, who played for Greenway of Coleraine and for the Gophers, has been
coach and general manager of the Omaha Lancers of the USHL for the past two
seasons. In the 1992-93 season, the Lancers took first place in the regular
season, then won the league playoffs.

Guentzel also guided the St. Paul Vulcans to the national championship in 1992.

<end quoted stuff>
[For Tony B & co.: I believe that Vulcans team had a goalie named Herlofsky.]

Speculation was in the sports gossip columns that Guentzel had to take a pay cut
to take the position, but that it will probably be made up in summer hockey camp
earnings. And, of course, I imagine this is a step toward an eventual goal of a
Div I head-coaching position.

And it's another member of that Coleraine mafia - I'm surprised he hasn't ended
up with the IHL Moose like Frank Serratore, Mike Antonovich and Kris Miller :-)

I guess the next question is: who is going to coach the Gophers goalies?
Obviously, they'll have to find another volunteer asst to do that. Mazzoleni
had done this. Before him volunteer assistant Paul Ostby had filled that role.
