University of Maine athletic director Michael Ploszek announced
late Friday afternoon he is resigning.
 
The announcement comes on the heels of University of Maine
System chancellor J. Michael Orenduff's announcement he found
no credence to charges by associate athletic director Anne
McCoy that Ploszek told her he was not going to report the
discovery of five graduate students' ineligibility to the NCAA.
 
One of those student-athletes was former Black Bear hockey
player Patrice Tardif.
 
Orenduff announced last week he was going to examine the
athletic department's handling of the ineligibility violations
after McCoy claimed independent investigator Stanley Tupper
neglected to include in his report testimony from her that
said Ploszek told her he was going to handle the violations
"in-house."
 
Tupper had been hired by UMaine president Frederick Hutchinson
to investigate similar allegations by former compliance
officer Linwood "Woody" Carville.
 
In a letter announcing his resignation, Ploszek said it was
time for the university to move on. The university has not
issued a statement.
