Jeff Senator from Vermont made the observation that Brown only sold out abo
ut 1400 of the 3000 seats at Meehan Auditorium for this weekend's series betwee
n the Catamounts and the Bears. This is about what I expected for this series.
Brown usually draws a little over 2000 for a regular season game, but students
are admitted without an admission charge for these games, while we were forced
to part with a whole $4.00 for the games this weekend. This is also one of the
reasons for his other comment about how obnoxious the Brown students were with
regard to their choice of language. The slight cost tended to keep the casual
fan away from the games this weekend, while the diehards were out in force.
The students and band normally occupy the two sections given to the Vermont
fans, forcing them elsewhere in the rink. Normally the opposing team's fans
are located on the opposite side of the rink, away from reach of the students
anctics. The seating this weekend not only placed the Vermont fans next to the
"Zoo Zone", the most vocal group of students, and in front of the band, it
placed both sets of fans on the same side of the rink. Why this was done, I
have no idea. The athletic department is also attempting to "clean up" the
cheers of the students by banning certain words and phrases in order to create
a "family atmosphere". The athletic department would like to see a large turn
out of fans, but they are also trying to harness the enthusiasm of the crowd in
this censorship attempt. We'll see what effect their efforts have next season
.
