Summary:
UNH used good passing, strong forechecking, and a little bit of
speed to outplay the Terriers in the first, but BU goalie Scott Cashman was
equal to the task. BU was a little lethargic in the early going, and had
lot of trouble moving the puck anywhere. UNH used this to their advantage
and managed 16 shots on Cashman in the first twenty minutes. Glenn Stewart
opened the scoring at 6:34 when he stole the puck away from Cashman, who was
out about 15 feet to the right of the net, and flipped it in for the score.
But that was also the close of UNH's scoring, as Cashman shut the door on
the Wildcats for the rest of the evening.
BU again had some trouble staying out of the box, and when UNH had
a 45-second two-man advantage with under 5 minutes left, it looked like the
Wildcats would pounce again. Kevin Thomson took a nice feed right into the
slot, walked in on Cashman, and let loose a wrist shot that Cashman kicked
right back out. Thomson wheeled right around to the other side of the net
but Cashman sprawled out on the ice and robbed him, covering the loose puck.
That was the beginning of the end for UNH. Not to be undaunted however, UNH
netminder Brett Abel came up with a nice pad save on Bob Lachance just a minute
later as BU killed off the two consecutive penalties.
The second period started off much the same, with UNH getting lots
of good opportunities and BU getting a few as well. It was BU that would
score the next three goals, starting with Mark Bavis's goal (the Globe says
it was Mike; I thought I saw Mark) tip in Dan Donato's shot through heavy
traffic from the point to make it 1-1 at 6:56. UNH still managed to get some
good chances, and Stewart almost had his second of the night had it not been
Cashman diving across the crease to come up big with his glove a few minutes
later. Bob Lachance got his second of the year at 14:12 when he unloaded a shot
from the top of the left face-off circle that sailed right past Abel. Abel
never even saw the shot; after it went in he threw up his hands in disgust
and skated well away from the net in frustration. Just under two minutes later
Dave Sacco (playing fourth line with a broken thumb) made a nice pass across
the goal mouth to Mike Pomichter, who lifted it over the sprawling Abel to
make it 3-1.
Both teams played with intensity in the third, as BU managed 14 shots
and UNH 15. Again, Cashman came up big on plays by Eric Flinton, Stewart,
and Royal to keep the Wildcats at bay. UNH mounted another attack late in
third when they pulled Abel on a BU penalty for the 6-on-4 advantage, but
this time BU's penalty killing showed its stuff and kept making the Wildcats
go all the way back to their zone to retrieve the puck. UNH defenseman Scott
Malone then took a hooking penalty to wipe out the 6-4 and force Abel to return
to the net, and BU coasted to their 12th win in 13 games.
It should be noted that BU was without their entire first line:
Sacco had the broken thumb and only skated a couple of shifts; and Jay
Pandolfo and Doug Friedman were benched by coach Parker for "socializing
on a night they shouldn't have been socializing" (Parker's quote in the paper -
goalies McKersie and Herlofsky were also benched, as was D Stephen Foster.
Friedman and Pnaldolfo are expected back for tonight's rematch, and although
Herlofsky dressed as backup last night he will not be dressed tonight.
UNH was hoping for a weekend sweep of the Terriers, which would have
aloowed them to capture BU in a tie for second place in Hockey East. Last
night's loss drops the Wildcats to 6-5-1 in HE, and gives BU a little breathing
room as the Terriers improve to 9-3-1 in the league.
The two meet again tonight at Walter Brown Arena in Boston.
