Amplifying on Geoff's comments, the most striking example in recent years of
a team with two differing styles of goalies is the 11193 Maine National
Championship team (it was '93, right?) Shawn Walsh was blessed with two
excellent goaltenders, arguably the two best goaltenders in college, with two
different techniques. Mike Dunham was the stay at home type--solid, play the
angles, stay back in the crease, quiet and steady. Garth Snow was the
aggressive play the puck style of goalie with the Ron Hextall type of offensive
consciousness. Walsh was in fact to match his goaltenders to the kind of team
he was facing, or, as he did against Lake Superior, the type of attack a team
was using within a game. Everyone remembers how Garth Snow came in after
Lake State had nearly forechecked the Black Bears through the boards to re
re-ignite their struggling offense. Of course Paul Kariya had something to do
with it too. And Jim Montgomery...

Maine is the only team I can think of which could do this. Match goalie to
opponent, goalie to you team's play. Harvard with Tracy and Israel used an
unchanging rotation, usually Israel on Friday, Tracy on Saturday. Of course
Tripp was selected for that stellar game he turned in against BU in the
Beanpot. As a rule though I don't think most college teams can employ goalie
tandems, the team without a #1 goalie. It's certainly a luxury that most teams
can afford recruiting-wise.

And Geoff, please don't mention Bryan Massotta and Mike Tamburro in the same
breath. It is true, they have differing styles. Tamburro stops the puck,
Masotta doesn't.

(that should read teams CAN't afford recruiting-wise)
