And a story ...

ORONO, Maine (AP) -- The University of Maine has asked an
independent investigator to look into a string of NCAA
eligibility violations.
School president Frederick Hutchinson announced the move
Thursday and said Maine's athletic director and former NCAA
compliance officer were placed on indefinite leave pending
the outcome of the investigation.
Former U.S. Rep. Stanley R. Tupper of Boothbay Harbor,
Maine, will look into events surrounding eligibility
violations of five students in five different sports.
"I am extremely concerned that all pertinent information
was not provided to me," Hutchinson said. "I believe it is
in everyone's best interests to have someone from outside
the university examine the facts and statements of those
who have been involved in the matter."
Linwood "Woody" Carville, who was fired as NCAA compliance
officer last week, accused athletic director Michael Ploszek
of initially trying to cover up the latest violations.
Ploszek, who denied the allegations, is currently
serving a one-week suspension. Carville has been waiting
possible reassignment within the school.
Problems for the Black Bears started early in the hockey
season when a freshman was ruled ineligible and the team had
to forfeit games. Then it was dsclosed that the women's
basketball team scheduled too many games, eliminating the squad
from the post-season North Atlantic Conference tournament.
Last month, it was discovered that five athletes were
ineligible because they were enrolled in six hours of classes,
two hours less than the NCAA minimum.
The school announced Thursday that senior Patrice Tardif's
eligibility has been restored, although the school's hockey
team must forfeit the games in which he played.
With the forfeitures, the defending national champion
hockey team is 5-26-2 overall and 2-19-1 in the Hockey East.
