Sunday afternoon at Bright, saw Northeastern swarm all over the ice,
as they crushed Harvard.  The superior skating of the Huskies left
the Crimson looking tired and needing oxygen.
 
Shelley Looney (Katherine Wyman, Angela Scerra) opened the scoring on
an oh-la-la move in close that deked out the Harvard goalie.  The
quickness of the rush made the goal.  Looney (Kim Haman, Scerra)
scored again on a perfect pass at the side of the net from Haman.
The finish came off a lovely swarming offense that just left the
Crimson watching.  Rayanne Conway (Bree Cheatham, Danyel Howard)
made it 0-3  when she shot home what must have been the third
rebound in a series of close shots.  In the second period, North-
eastern continued its domination when Conway (Howard, Kim Drews)
finished a great rush with a good shot from a wide angle.  In the
third period, Harvard got on the board, when Megan Hall (Diana Clark,
Colleen Malek) led a long break-in play, and stuffed home her own
rebound.  The Huskies continued to attack for most for the third
period, but there was no more scoring.
 
Northeastern looked real good.  They seem to be using a triangulation
offense with a touch of rotation.  What makes it effective, is that
at this point of the season they are skating and passing as a team.
The easy, fluid movement they develop on the ice generated numerous
scoring chances, while making it difficult on the other team to do
much of anything against them.  The line of Scerra, Looney and Haman
were superb.  Their speed and touch, and let's-get-at-em philosophy
is performing wonderfully.  The line of Howard, Conway and Sobek
isn't bad either.  In particular I liked the play of Conway.  Her
quick moves were great to watch.  On defense, Bree Cheatham and
Kim Drews had solid games.  Their reads and reactions were right
on target.  Goalie Kim Flatt had a good game in the net.  NU is
going with 3 lines and 2 defense pairs, and seems to have hit a nice
blend.  I look forward to Thursday night's match against UNH at
Matthews.
 
Harvard looked pretty scared of this fast skating Huskie team.  They
just don't have the legs to move with a team that good.  Erin
Villiotte had a fairly good match in goal.  The defensive pairing of
Winkie Mleczko and Colleen Malek played a strong match.  Together
they are stopping plays, and creating some outlet passes for the
offense to go with.  The newly formed line of Hall, Clark, and
Jennifer Duval looked good.  They passed well together, and seemed
to be developing an understanding of each other on the ice.  Overall,
the Crimson looked tired.  I hope seeing what a skating team can do
will encourage them to work on their own skills more.  It is hard
to get a shot off, when the back-checking forward is swooping around
you and heading off with the puck on a rush of her own.
