Summary:

St. Lawrence goalie Paul Spagnoletti was able to hold off a late Union
rally to lead the Saints to a 3-2 win over the Dutchmen in both teams'
ECAC league openers. Spencer Meany's 2 2nd period goals gave
Spagnoletti all the offense he would need.

Union was outshot 24-2 (!) in the first period, but thanks to
outstanding goaltending by Junior Mike Gallant, it was only 1-0 at the
first intermission. The second was much more evenly played, but SLU
came out with a 3-1 lead heading into the third. But this year's
Union team has some offensive firepower. Freshman Chris Ford's power
play goal at 8:04 of the third brought Union to within one, but
Spagnoletti would take over from there. The Dutchmen had several
chances to tie, but could not get it past Spagnoletti.

A win would have been nice, but this was still a huge improvement over
last season's 7-0 loss at SLU. After being outplayed badly in the
first, the Dutchmen played right with St. Lawrence, and it sounded
like they pretty much dominated the third. You have to remember that
this was the first league game for a team which probably started 7 or
8 freshmen.

Union is now 0-1 in the league, 2-1 overall. The Dutchmen will face
Clarkson at Cheel Arena tonight at 7. Last season, Clarkson crushed
Union in the game at Clarkson, 9-0.
