We hosted local author,  Brian J. Theriault , from Fort Kent who shared his
knowledge of snowshoe making and basket making  starting from picking the
right tree, one piece frame building and weaving rawhide for sturdy webs.
His books “Leaving Tracks: A Maine Tradition” and “Brown Ash Snowshoes: A
North American Tradition” give exacting details giving the reader the
knowledge necessary to build a set of snowshoes. His other publication
“Brown Ash Baskets”, also very detailed, shows how closely related both
basket making and snowshoe frames are.  His passion for sharing an almost
lost art was contagious with a lively discussion between author and
