MARTIN KARIYA LEADS MAINE PAST PROVIDENCE WITH FOUR GOALS
ORONO, Maine -- Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) scored
four goals, three in the third period, to lead the University of Maine
men's ice hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Providence in Hockey East
action Friday night at Alfond Arena. Maine improves to 10-6-3, 5-2-1 in
Hockey East play while Providence falls to 8-11-1, 4-7-0 in conference play.
The game was tied at 1-1 after two periods of play but the two teams
exploded for seven third period goals. Kariya opened the scoring for Maine
at 5:37 of the first period on assists from Colin Shields (Glasgow,
Scotland) and Peter Metcalf (Pembroke, Mass.). It is the 11th straight game
that Shields has registered at least one point. Maine took a 1-0 lead into
the first intermission. Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) tied the game at 1-1
at 17:50 of the second with his second goal of the season from Jon
DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.).
What was a defensive battle through two periods, turned into a shootout in
the final frame. Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) netted his fifth of
the season from Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) and Drew Omicioli (W.
Warwick, R.I.) 1:52 into the third period. Just 1:34 later, Stephen Wood
was whistled for a penalty that put the Black Bears on the power play with
a chance to tie the game. Providence, however, was able to score a
short-handed goal when Michael Lucci (Parma, Ohio) put the puck past UMaine
netminder Mike Morrison (Medford, Mass.) after the puck took a funny
bounce. Providence, who has not won at Alfond Arena since March 24, 1989,
was looking to put an end to that streak with a 3-1 lead with 14:23
remaining in the game.
Maine started its comeback when Michael Schutte (Burlington, Ontario)
scored at 8:11 to cut the Friar lead to 3-2. Kariya and Prestin Ryan
(Arcola, Saskatchewan) dished out assists on the goal. Kariya tied the game
at 3-3 at 11:37 on assists from Shields and Schutte. Kariya put the Black
Bears up 4-3 just 22 seconds later when he scored his third of the game at
11:46 from Schutte and Metcalf.
Kariya scored the game-winner when he netted an unassisted goal at 18:28
off a turnover by the Friars on a faceoff. He figured in the scoring of all
five UMaine goals, and was one point shy of tying the school record for
points in a game with six. It is the first time since January 30, 1993 that
a Black Bear has scored four goals in a game. Cal Ingraham was the last
person to accomplish that feat, almost nine years ago. Jon DiSalvatore
netted his 11th goal of the season at 19:27, but Providence was unable to
score the game-tying goal.
Maine outshot Providence 44-33 in the game. Each team registered 17 shots
on goal in the third period. Mike Morrison stopped 29 shots in net and
improves to 7-1-1 on the season. He tied his career-high with seven wins in
a season. Nolan Shaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) made 39 saves in net
for the Friars. He falls to 7-10-1 on the season.
The Black Bears return to action Sunday, January 6, 2002 when they host
Dartmouth at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine at 2:00
p.m. Providence returns to action on January 11, 2002 when they host Boston
University at 7:00 p.m.
