CERELLA LEADS QUINNIPIAC TO 6-1 WIN OVER BENTLEY IN Q-CUP OPENER

NORTHFORD, Conn. --- Chris Cerrella (North Massapequa, N.Y.)
scored two goals and added one assist, his third multiple-point effort in
as many games, to lead Quinnipiac University to a 6-1 win over Bentley
College in the opening round of the fifth annual Quinnipiac Cup Tournament
Friday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion.
It was the season-opener for the Falcons, who will meet Fairfield
University, another MAAC Hockey League rival, Saturday at 4:00 in the
third place game. Quinnipiac, the preseason favorite in the MAAC,
improved to 2-0-1 and will meet Air Force, a 5-2 winner of Fairfield, in
the 7:00 title game.
A scoreless game for most of the opening period, Quinnipiac got on
the board at 18:15 when Neil Breen (Spokane, Wash.) capitalized on a
5-on-3 power play. His first of the season was assisted by Cerrella and
Shawn Mansoff (Edmonton, Alberta).
In the second period, the Braves exploded for four goals, three of
which came in a 7:11 span. Cerrella got things started with a goal at
1:27. Mansoff tipped in a goal at 12:35 and Cerrella bagged his second of
the game just 1:24 later. Freshman defenseman Wade Winkler (Edmonton,
Alberta) finished out the second-period scoring with a blast from the
point at 19:46.
Both teams scored once in the final stanza, Bentley junior John
Yianoukas (Potsdam, N.Y./ Kent School) on a power play at 4:32, and the
Braves' Chris Maniatas (Medford) at 6:14. Yianoukas' goal was assisted by
junior John DiGennaro (Amesbury/Amesbury HS).
Bentley senior netminder Ray DeVincent (Waltham/St. Sebastian's
HS) played well in defeat, turning away 50 QU shots as the Braves had a
commanding 56-20 edge in shots on goal. J.C. Wells (Sheffield) made 19
stops for Quinnipiac.
