Having spent many a game next to the goal judge box down at ice level, I
can say that the goal judge often has a MUCH better view of many "iffy"
goals.  This is especially true of times when the goalie blocks the
puck...but does so AFTER it has crossed the plane of the Red-Line.
Making the goal judge obsolete could add more confusion to these
situations.
 
You wanted to spark thought on the topic...so there's some of mine.  I
like the idea in theory of the ref having a goal button...but like all
good ideas, it need consideration.
