This evening's game against Alaska Fairbanks was a battle of special teams.
While the Nanooks made some early attempts to slow the quicker Falcons down,
this was a fast skating, end-to-end game.

Bowling Green's first goal came at 17:10 in the 1st Period when Brian Holzinger
outsped his covering defender to bury a short-handed goal (the first of what
was to be three SH goals for the night for BG). Just 25 seconds later, Jason
Clark buried another SH goal (same penalty) to make the score 2-0 BGSU. The
Nanooks came back with just 3 seconds remaining in the period to score on a
nice shot by Pat Williams. Perhaps, the Falcons started celebrating that
period just a hair too soon.

At 10:42 of the 2nd Period, BG's Curtis Fry takes one step on his defender to
throw one up glove side against Moberg to stretch the lead to 3-1. Holzinger,
then, scored his second of the night at 17:40 when Brett Punchard backhands a
pass from the left side of the net to a waiting Holzinger who scores while
Moberg still is looking the other way. (This was a beautiful shot). The
Nanooks, however, were to score again just 30 seconds later to negate that 3
point lead on a goal by Corey Spring. The final goal - a Power Play goal - was
scored by BGSU's Jason Clark (his second of the night also) at 19:30. The
interesting thing about this goal is that it came just 11 seconds after the
referee (Edwards) absolutely blew a call which disallowed a BGSU goal which hit
off the pipe, then the crossbar, and into the net. He said he never saw it go
in. Video replay clearly shows he was mistaken.

The third period saw one more goal for each team - and those both special
teams' goals. BGSU's SH goal came at 6:07 from Mike Johnson (unassisted), and
Fairbanks' final goal - a PP goal was scored by Dallas Ferguson with good
coverage in front of the net at 11:40.

My observation was that the Nanooks were not able to skate consistently
end-to-end with the Falcons, and while this was an enjoyable game to watch, was
never really in question for the Falcons. The Falcons face the Nanooks again
tomorrow night at the Ice Arena.

Brian Holzinger looked spectacular on ice tonight easily outdistancing his UAF
coverage again and again scoring 2 goals (one SH). What a joy to watch!!
