This is a reply that I received with Deron with respect to Maine players
looking to transfer because of recent problems at Maine.

It's pretty much speculation because very few schools have
scholarships to give, and since Maine has a lot of Canadian seniors
getting a scholarship is very important since the exchange rate is
far to high for these students to pay tuition.

I haven't heard of any specific players looking to go to another
school, but Blair Allison and Jeff Tory are looking to try out for
the Canadian National Team. Tory would then come back in 1997-8, but
Allison's eligibility would be used up. This would seemingly be good
for Maine because while Allison is good, Maine isn't going anywhere
this year so might as well train the rookie goalie, and Tory would
also be more valuable in 97-98 with only 14 scholarships and at least
a shot at the NCAA's then they are this year.

It's difficult because as I've said before players have to weigh the
academics (yes some actually want to graduate), financial situation
(for instance only NU and Merrimack have scholarships left in Hockey
East to my knowledge) and legit shot at NCAA title. Blair Allison
isn't likely to transfer to NU because they aren't going to win or
have a shot at winning a title next year, it's a lateral move.

So what you've got is a small percentage of teams, even less when you
figure financial aid, that these players might transfer. I wouldn't
be surprised to see a couple of the MA players (Lovell, Roenick) go
to BC, BU or something like that because they could probably a)
afford it, b) live at home, c) they have a shot to play in
post-season there. However I see more players trying either Major
Junior, pros or national teams. I don't expect to be seeing a mass
exodus to other DivI teams given the above.

I'll let you know if I hear anything about specifics, but other than
Allison and Tory considering trying out for national club, no other
specifics yet.
