UMASS DARTMOUTH HOLDS OFF CURRY, 3-2

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three second-period goals, then held off Curry, 3-2, in their Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Arena Saturday.

The Corsairs struck for three goals within a period of just over 10 minutes in the second period. Junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) took a pass from senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) and fired a wrist shot from the slot high into the net past starting goaltender Andrew Lisi to tie the game at 1-1 at 5:07 of the second period. Junior forward Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons) put UMass Dartmouth ahead for good when he scored a power play goal at the 13:08 mark of the second period, knocking home the rebound of a shot by senior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy). Junior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) also assisted on the play. Just over two minutes later, McCullough took a perfect pass from Grant in the slot and rifled a shot into the corner of the net. Sophomore defenseman Eric Quinlan (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) drew the other assist on the goal.

Ricky Heimbrecht drew the Colonels to within a goal when he scored on the power play, firing a slap shot past a screened UMass Dartmouth goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) 14 seconds after the power play began at 16:03. But Green and the Corsairs held Curry off the rest of the way, despite a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct issued to Vrolyk for hitting from behind at 18:47 of the second period.

The Colonels, who dressed only 12 skaters, six fewer than is customary, broke on top in the first period. Jonathan Whitham gave them a 1-0 lead 13 seconds into a power play when he fired home a slap shot through a screen with just five seconds remaining in the first period.

“This was a game matching two fast, transition-oriented teams with skilled offensive players,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “They were missing some of their players, but the players they suited up had a lot of talent. They scored a power play goal late in the first period, and that usually hurts you, but we responded well to the challenge and played well in the second period. It was a tough game for Jeff Green, because he didn’t get a lot of action, but, when he did, he saw some good shots.”

Each team had 23 shots on goal. Green made 21 saves, while Lisi and Zach Cardella, who relieved Lisi after UMass Dartmouth’s third goal, combined to make 20.

UMD improved to 9-0-0 and 4-0-0 in conference play with the victory, while Curry fell to 5-2-0 and 5-1-0 in ECAC Northeast play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Tufts at the Hetland Memorial Arena Tuesday evening, while Curry will play next when they visit Geneseo State next Friday night.
