UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS SOUTHERN MAINE, 3-1

NEW BEDFORD, MA–Freshman forward Francis Gunn (Winthrop, MA/Berkshire Academy) scored the game-winning goal in the second period and freshman goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) made 31 saves to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team a 3-1 victory over Southern Maine in a non-conference game at the Hetland Ice Arena Saturday.

Gunn’s goal, an unassisted tally at 6:47 of the second period, gave the Corsairs a 2-0 lead.

Senior forward Ian Seaver (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) had given UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead at 9:39 of the first period when he slipped a shot by USM goaltender David Beckles. Freshman forward Chris Shore (New Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) and senior defenseman David Cioch (Springfield, MA/New England Jr. Coyotes) assisted.

Mark Carragher cut the Corsairs’ lead in half when he scored for Southern Maine at 1:45 of the final period. Ben Loss and Chris Sparkes drew the assists.

The Huskies pulled Beckles at 18:49 of the third period, but sophomore forward Jeff Grant scored an unassisted, empty net goal at 19:18 to clinch the victory.

USM out shot UMass Dartmouth, 31-23. Beckles made 23 saves for the Huskies.

UMD improved to 5-4-0 with the victory, while Southern Maine fell to 1-5-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Connecticut College Wednesday evening.
