PLYMOUTH STATE DOWNS UMASS DARTMOUTH IN OVERTIME

NEW BEDFORD, MA– Jay Londer’s power play goal 3:49 into sudden death overtime gave Plymouth State a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team at the Hetland Ice Arena Saturday evening.

Londer scored off a scramble in front of the net after the Panthers won a face-off in the Corsair zone 34 seconds after UMD senior forward Joe Walsh (Kingston, MA/New England College) was penalized for charging.

Plymouth State scored twice to tie the score in the second period. UMD took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) scored the only goal of the first period at the 10:57 mark. Lindner’s power play goal was assisted by senior forward Eric Frank (Waltham, MA/Traverse City Enforcers).

Topo LaCroix tied it in the second period for the Panthers, assisted by Goose LaCroix and Pat Turcotte at 1:29.

The Corsairs went ahead, 2-1 when senior forward Mike McPherson (Chelsea, MA/Brewster Academy) scored at the 9:25 mark. Walsh and senior forward Ian Seaver (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) assisted. PSU tied it on Topo LaCroix’s second goal of the game at 19:25 of the second period. Once again, Turcotte and Goose LaCroix drew the assists.

UMass Dartmouth had a two-man advantage for 50 seconds late in the third period, and also had the benefit of a five-minute power play when PSU’s Loren Tennent was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for hitting from behind. But the Panthers staved off the Corsairs’ attack.

“The keys were us giving up a goal in the last minute of the second period, and then not taking advantage on the power play late in the third period,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “If you kill a two-man power play and a five-minute man advantage, something good will usually happen to you, and it happened to Plymouth State.”

The Corsairs out shot Plymouth State, 40-21. Panther goalie Karl Helgesson made 38 saves, while UMass Dartmouth freshman goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) made 18.

UMD fell to 2-2 with the defeat, 1-1 in ECAC Northeast Conference play, while PSU improved to 2-1 and 2-0. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Worcester State Tuesday evening.
