Maine Women's Hockey Ties UConn, 3-3

STORRS, CT (March 1) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team
played to a 3-3 draw against Maine in an ECAC Eastern League game on Friday
night at the UConn Ice Arena.

The tie keeps Maine (15-14-4, 7-10-3) one point ahead of the Huskies
(11-19-3, 7-11-2) in the ECAC Eastern League standings. Tomorrow's rematch
of the two teams could propel UConn into the fifth place position for the
ECAC quarterfinals to be held next weekend.

Tiffany Owens (Belleville, MI) opened the scoring at the 2:57 mark of the
first period. After receiving a pass from Angie Wallace (Mullett Lake, MI),
Owens wrapped behind the goal and stuffed the puck the corner of the net.
Maine tied the score at the midpoint (11:52) on a goal from Emily Stevens,
and the Huskies took the one goal advantage with 2:27 left in the period.
Shannon Connolly (Baldwinsville, NY) notched the goal on assists from
Stefanie Snow (Bedford, BH) and Caitlin Salazar-Reid (London, Ontario).

Meagan Aarts tied the score again for the Black Bear's at the 3:50 mark of
the middle period. Just under a minute later, Kim Berry (Haverhill, MA) came
from behind the Black Bear's net shot the puck through Maine goalie Lara
Smart's legs for her team leading 22nd goal.

UConn held off Maine through most of the third period, preserving the one
goal lead. Maine pulled Smart with a minute left in regulation. With the
extra man on the ice, Jamie Hill flicked in the game-tying nod off an Aarts
shot from the point with under a second remaining on the game clock.

Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) stopped 24 shots, while Smart recorded 33
saves in net. UConn out shot Maine, 36-27.

Connecticut and Maine will face-off again tomorrow (3/2) at 3:00 pm at the
UConn Ice Arena.
