CAMBRIDGE, MASS. -- It was announced on March 15 at the Annual HOCKEY EAST
Banquet that five Providence College hockey players earned HOCKEY EAST
accolades.  Sophomore Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan), senior Matt Libby
(Saco, Maine), sophomore Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan),
freshman Regan Kelly (Imperial Saskatchewan) and junior Peter Fregoe
(Massena, N.Y.) earned HOCKEY EAST accolades.  In addition, Friar Head Coach
Paul Pooley was named HOCKEY EAST Coach of the Year
Pooley, in his seventh season as the Friars' head coach, guided the Friars
to their best finish ever in HOCKEY EAST regulare season.  For his efforts,
Pooley has been rewarded as this year's recipient of the Bob Kullen Coach of
the Year Award in HOCKEY EAST.  Pooley becomes the first PC coach ever the
claim this honor.  The Friars' were picked sixth in the preseason coaches'
poll and overcame numerous losses due to graduation to finish tied for
second-place with Maine.  The Friars posted a 13-8-5 record in league play,
it marked the most HOCKEY EAST wins for a Providence College team since the
1988-89 squad finished 13-11-2..
Rask, the Friars' top scorer, was named HOCKEY EAST First-Team All-Star.  It
marks the first time a Friar has received this honor since the 1994-95
season when Chad Quennville earned first team accolades.  This season, Rask
has tallied 22 goals and 28 assists in 36 games, placing second overall in
HOCKEY EAST.  Rask also was second in scoring in HOCKEY EAST play with 33
points (15 goals, 18 assists) in 24 games.  Rask, a former Saskatchewan
Junior Hockey League star, is the son of Roger and Arlene Rask.
Libby was named HOCKEY EAST Second-Team All-Star.  The senior defenseman is
the Friars' highest scoring blueliner, notching 10 goals and 19 assists in
36 games.  Libby, PC's co-captain, was the second-highest scoring defenseman
in HOCKEY EAST and was a vital part of the development of Providence's young
defensive core.  Libby, a graduate of Thornton Academy, is the son of Gene
Libby.
Schaefer, emerged as one of the top netminders in HOCKEY EAST this season,
backboning the Friars resurgence while earning Second-Team HOCKEY EAST
All-Star accolades.  The sophomore goaltender was second in HOCKEY East play
with a .912 save percentage. In 22 games this season, Schaefer recorded a
14-6-2 record with a 2.27 goals against average. Schaefer, a graduate of
Yellow Grass High School, is the son of Peter and Tracy Schaefer.
Kelly, a freshman defenseman, was the runner-up for the HOCKEY EAST Rookie
of the Year.  However, Kelly did garner HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie honors.  This
season, Kelly registered four goals and 20 assists while appearing in 33
games.  It marked the second consecutive season that a Friar has been named
to the All-Rookie Team.  Last season, Fregoe earned All-Rookie honors.
Kelly is a graduate of Nipawin Comprehensive and is the son of David and
Shirley Kelly.
Fregoe responded to his HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie selection last season and
earned HOCKEY EAST Honorable Mention All-Star honors this season.  Fregoe is
the Friars' second leading scorer this season, with 15 goals and 20 assists
while appearing in all 37 games.  Fregoe, a graduate of Valley High School,
is the son of Robert Fregoe and Bonnie Price
        The third-seeded Friars (21-11-5) face the second-seeded Maine Black Bears
(19-10-7) in the HOCKEY EAST Semifinals on Friday, March 16 at 8 p.m. at the
FleetCenter in Boston, Mass. The winner will advance to the championship
game against the winner of Friday night's Boston College/UMass-Lowell game
at 5:00 p.m.
