PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Marc Suderman scored at 16:26 of the second overtime to
give the Providence College Friars a 4-3 win in the third game of the
best-of-three HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal series on Sunday, March 11 at PC's
Schneider Arena. With the win, the Friars advance to the HOCKEY EAST
Semifinals at the FleetCenter against Maine on Friday, March 16 at 8:00 p.m.
Suderman's goal was scored after 96:26 of play, making it the longest
contest in HOCKEY EAST history and the eighth longest in NCAA history.
Senior Cole Gendreau gave the Friars a 1-0 lead at the 2:49 mark of the
first period. Peter Zingoni carried the through the neutral zone and
dropped it for Gendreau just over the blue line. Gendreau received the pass
and then rifled a high slap shot past BU goaltender Sean Fields. The goal
was Gendreau's first of the season.
In the second period, the two teams exchanged short-handed goals followed
by a pair of power-play goals. BU's Mike Pandolfo started the scoring with
a short-handed goal at the 3:20 mark. Carl Corazzini intercepted a pass and
fired a shot that deflected off Friar goaltender Nolan Schaefer's pads and
Pandolfo knocked in the rebound. The Friars regained the lead at the
10:12 mark on Cody Loughlean's short-handed goal. Pandolfo struck again for
the Terriers at the 11:26 mark, scoring his 16th goal of the season on a
power-play. PC entered the third period with a one-goal lead courtesy of
Jay Leach. Leach one-timed a pass from Regan Kelly on a power play for his
fifth goal of the season, at the 18:09 mark of the second period.
The Terriers' Mark Mullen forced overtime with a short-handed goal at the
4:30 mark of the third period. Mullen skated to the right of Schaefer and
tried to lift a centering pass, the puck hit Friar defenseman Shawn Weiman
and deflected into the net for the game-tying goal.
PC had numerous opportunities to win the game in regulation but they were
held off by Fields who stopped 10 shots in the third period.
In the first overtime period, both teams had scoring chances but the play
of both goaltenders kept the game tied 3-3 after 80 minutes of play.
After making 17 stops in the 36 minutes of overtime play, the Friars were
able to get a shot past Fields when Suderman tipped a blast from the point
through the five hole to win the game.
Schaefer finished with 24 stops in the win. Fields earned the game's No. 2
star after recording a career-high 48 saves.
With the win, Providence improved to 21-11-5, while BU finished the season
at 14-20-3..
