PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Boston University Terriers defeated the Providence
College Friars, 2-1, in the second game of the best-of-three HOCKEY EAST
Quarterfinal series on Saturday, March 10 at PC's Schneider Arena. With the
win, the Terriers evened the series at 1-1. The third game will be played
on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at PC's Schneider Arena.
The Friars tallied the game's first goal just 1:42 into the first period.
Freshman Jason Platt controlled the puck at the blue line and fired a pass
to a wide-open John Luszcz at the top of the crease. Luszcz redirected the
pass under the pads of Terrier goaltender Sean Fields for his first
collegiate goal. At the 5:50 mark, BU tied the game 1-1, on Mike
Pandolfo's power-play goal. Pandolfo fired a shot from the left side that
deflected off the skate of Friar defenseman Matt Libby and went into the net
past PC netminder Boyd Ballard.
The Terriers took their first lead of the game at the 7:56 mark of the
second period off another deflected shot. Freshman defenseman Freddy Meyer
blasted a shot from the blue line that deflected off a Providence defender
and past Ballard for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Both goaltenders played strong in the third period as neither team was able
to score.
Field played a strong game in net for BU, earning his sixth win of the
season after making a career-high 37 stops. Ballard recorded 21 saves in
the loss.
With the win, the BU improved to 14-19-3, while Providence fell to 20-11-5.
The final game of the series will be televised live on Fox Sports New
England at 7:00 p.m.
