Friday's game was a good one for the Mavs, and they pulled out with a 3-1
win and increased their unbeaten streak to 4. I must say Western Michigan
jumped up to a strong #2 for dirtiest team that's visited the bullpen
(behind Bowling Green). Skogland being racked by a WMU player was just a
foreshadowing of Saturday's events. On the whole I thought Duke Shegos did
pretty good on Friday, didn't live up to his repuation at all.
 
Saturday was all about a frustrated Western Michigan team trying to figure
out the Mavs. The game ended in a 4-4 tie, though UNO carried the play for
probably 2/3rds of the game.
 
Shegos called an ok game, though the 12 WMU penalties to 5 UNO is
misleading. 2 of WMU's were called by the asst. refs, 2 were misconducts,
and Shegos could've easily called another misconduct or 2 and several other
minors on WMU. I give him credit for calling the penalty in OT, even if it
took about 5 infractions over the span of a minute to finally find one worthy.
 
WMU was booed out of the building by the fans at the Bullpen, and I was one
of em. I was honestly surprised the gloves didn't go down at the end of the
OT, as there was a really heated shoving match which WMU instigated.
 
Oh well, UNO gets 3 out of 4 points and Nebraska kicked Kansas St's butt.
Good weekend overall.
 
 
Here's my updated CCHA referee rankings from USCHO:
Matt Shegos (even though we haven't seen him at the Civic this year, can't
complain about the reffing in the NMU series)
Duke Shegos (Could've vaulted past his brother if he had had more guts and
called some more penalties on WMU on Sat, or at least misconducts. But he's
still better than...)
Cline (Whether he was following the interference mandate or doing his own
thing, he called way to many penalties. Still, he was at least fair with
them, which is more than...)
Rutherford (Just plain bad, still don't know whether the Tarnished Domers
paid him off or if 8,314 fans in Omaha intimidated him)
 
Still waiting to see Piotrowski, the CCHA's best, and Graff, who's been
voted by some as the CCHA's worst. Not sure who else is out there, but I'm
keeping track.
