Greg, that's an understandable quandry which can be resolved with this simple
two-step exercise:
Step 1: Cut a canteloup into 24 precisely equal slices and compare the shape of
any one to the shape of the Eastern Time Zone.
Step 2: Spend a summer on Eastern Daylight Savings Time in the Land of the
Midnight Sun, which is anywhere between Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan.
Then you'll understand that the real mystery is how the time zone czar was taken
in by people living close to Oregon who wanted the economic benefit of being in
the same time zone as New York City, . . . and where it all would have ended if
Lake Michigan hadn't existed as a natural barrier.
