As Jim said, Bananas is Maine's mascot.  A number of years ago, a child
was tried as the mascot (Son of Bananas?).  Unfortunately, during his
first performance he was injured;  a college student has been used ever
since.
 
During the tike's first game, the arena staff lowered the scoreboard to
make some repairs.  Most everyone thought Son of Bananas could see the
thing being lowered and was skating under it for show.  He could not and
was taken off the ice with a concussion, after banging into it.
