Today, starting just before 2 pm, the network on Orono campus
experienced a wide spread outage effecting not only connectivity on
campus but to services hosted in the ITS datacenter located at UM
including MaineStreet, Blackboard, etc... The cause of the outage was
traffic related rather than due to a hardware failure.
Connectivity was restored to the data center and most of Orono campus at
about 2:15pm. The west side of campus (Hart, Alumni, Fogler area) was
progressively brought back on line until approximately 3pm as we
isolated the source of the traffic causing the outage.
We are currently analyzing the event and will take appropriate steps to
prevent similar traffic from causing problems in the future.
We apologize for the inconvenience this outage caused at such a critical
time of the academic year.
