Keys to the Tie:

In the second period, with the score tied at one and OSU on the power play,
goaltender Tom Askey (OSU) found himself seeing the puck and two KSU players
coming at him. He made it to the puck first but cleared it right onto the
stick of a KSU player who promptly put it into the empty net for an easy score
and a 2-1 KSU lead after two periods.

In the third, Askey redeemed himself as OSU began the period with a power play
and gave up a breakaway which Askey stuffed, preventing what could have been a
killer 3-1 Flashes lead. With OSU leading 3-2 after two nice goals by frosh
Pierre DuFour (one coming after OSU cross-checked a KSU player in the OSU
offensive zone (no call) causing a turnover and allowing DuFour to walk in
alone), Chad Powers got a 5-minute intent to injure penalty. KSU got caught
napping as Sean Sutton made a weak attempt to clear the puck out of the OSU
defensive zone. The puck got behind the KSU defensemen who appeared to be
taking their time getting back to it. OSU's Joe Sellers sprinted by them and
broke in alone on KSU's Scott Shaw and scored short-handed. Later, KSU's Steve
McLean narrowed the gap to 4-3 with a goal near the end of the 5-minute major.
Claude Morin tied the score with just under a minute remaining as the OSU
defense lost sight of him and allowed him to park himself on the edge of the
crease. A passing lane opened and Evan Sylvester made a nice feed across the
mouth of the goal which Morin one-timed into the empty net to force OT.

OSU got the better of OT play as Shaw had to come up with several spectacular
saves. Askey stuffed a 2 on 1 early in the extra period as he made a sliding
save after a KSU forward tried to one-time a perfect centering pass. The same
two teams will try to decide something Saturday night at KSU.

Streaks:

Ended--OSU scores its first short-handed goal since the 91-92 season.

Continued--OSU is still winless in 1993 against NCAA opponents. Their last
win: vs. Cornell (3-0) in the Cleveland Holiday Tournament in December of 1992.
(Sorry Big Red fans. :-)
