summary:
The last-place Northeastern Huskies gave 2nd-place BU quite a
scare as they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Terriers at Matthews Arena
tonight.
The first period opened with BU getting some good opportunites
as both teams moved the puck very well. After a few matching penalties
mid-way through the period, Jon Jenkins drew first blood for the Terriers
when he took a pass across the slot from Kevin O'Sullivan and beat NU
netminder Mike Veisor with a low shot on his glove side for his third of
the year, making it 1-0 at 10:32.
Just over four minutes later defenseman Kevin O'Sullivan notched his
fourth of the season when he took a pass from Dave Sacco deep in the BU zone
and flew up the near boards, cutting right in on Veisor and flipping it between
his pads to put BU up 2-0 at 14:34.
Despite being down a pair, NU continued to hustle and move the puck
well and at 17:22 of the first it paid off when Mike Taylor poked a shot through
BU goalie Derek Herlofsky's legs to cut the lead to 2-1.
Mark Bavis and Bob Kellogg tangled up just before the close of the pe
period but Kellogg took an extra 2:00 for roughing to give BU the rest of
the period on a power play, but the Huskies did a good job of clearing the
puck and stymied the Terriers the rest of the way.
The second period was much like the first and both teams were skating
well. At 4:12 Mike Prendergast, who potted the winner in OT last Friday at
Maine, took a feed and slid it through Veisor's legs to put BU back up by
2. In the next 15:00 each team had 2 power plays but no one could convert.
Mike Veisor came up with some big saves on the 2 BU PP's to keep the Huskies
in it. With just 00:54 left in the period, Jason Melong banged a Dan Lupo
pass over Herlofsky's leg to again cut the BU lead to 1.
The third was marked by a rash of penalties as both teams began to
look weary. But as the period wore on NU managed to continue getting some
good chances, and with just under 4 minutes to play Mike Taylor nailed
his second of the game on a pass from Sebastien LaPlante to tie it at 3.
NU dominated the final minutes of the game and if not for Herlofsky and
an alert Kevin O'Sullivan the Terriers might have been in deep trouble.
Overtime opened with both teams playing back-and-forth, wide
open hockey. Just a minute into OT Dave Sacco had Veisor caught out of
position but an NU defenseman was there to steal the puck and open
up a fast break. Dino Grossi carried it into the BU zone and walked in
but never managed to get a shot off. The play turned right around
when Kevin O'Sullivan hit Doug Friedman with a pass, who in turn
broke in the Huskies' zone with Petteri Koskimaki. In a play that
looked a lot like last Friday's Pomichter-Prendergast 2-on-1 against
Maine, Friedman put it right on Koskimaki's stick, and he flipped it
over a diving Mike Veisor to give the Terriers the 4-3 win.
I neglected to mention that 2 BU goals were called back in the
third--at 5:00 Mike Prendergast's wrister hit the crossbar (light went on
but was instantly waved-off; then at 13:46 Doug Friedman poked loose
a rebound from Veisor and banged it in the net, but the ref had already
blown the whistle. These two calls seemed to frustrate the Terriers a bit
and allowed NU to take control of the last several minutes of the game
(with Taylor's tying goal being the fruits of their labor).
Petteri Koskimaki doubled his season scoring total tonight, and
it was a just reward after having over 20 goals last season and only *1*
so far this season.
In the return engagement of the home-and-home weekend, the two
go at it again tomorrow night at BU's Walter Brown Arena.
