HOCKEY TEAM BOWS AT WESTERN NEW ENGLAND, 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, MA–Mike Majesty scored twice in the third period to give Western New England College a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at Smead Arena Saturday.

Majesty’s second goal broke a 2-2 tie and allowed the Bears to break the Corsairs’ nine-game ECAC Northeast Conference winning streak.

The Corsairs took a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Matt Berard (Calgary, AB/Berkshire Academy) scored at the 15:11 mark of the opening period. Senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and sophomore forward Paul Jerusik (Springfield, MA/Lawrence Academy) assisted.

The Bears tied it on a shorthanded goal by Hank Levin at 14:24 of the second period. UMass Dartmouth quickly replied in kind, getting a shorthanded goal from sophomore defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm) less than four minutes later. Sophomore forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) drew the lone assist at the 18:16 mark.

Majesty tied the game with an unassisted goal at 1:55 of the third period, then converted a pass from Chris Lloyd at 11:29. UMass Dartmouth removed junior Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) with 56 seconds remaining, but were unable to beat WNEC goaltender Justin Richards for the equalizer.

The Corsairs, who were blanked on their six power play opportunities while stopping the Bears on all five of their chances, out shot the Bears, 26-14. Green made 11 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Richards made 21 stops for WNEC.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 8-5-1 and 6-1-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the defeat, while the Bears improved to 3-12-1 and 2-5-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston in a non-conference game Tuesday evening.
