no. 12 Providence men’s hockey TIES MeRRIMACK, 2-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 12th-ranked Providence College men’s hockey team
skated to a 2-2 tie with Merrimack College on Friday, November 22 in HOCKEY
EAST action at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Providence graduate
student Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) scored the tying goal on a power-play
with 3:35 remaining in the game to force the 2-2 tie.
After a scoreless first period, Merrimack’s Tim Reidy tallied the first
goal of the game during a power-play at 7:20 of the second period. Bryan
Schmidt fired a shot from the point which Reidy redirected between Friar
goaltender Bobby Goepfert’s legs. Providence evened the score at the 11:52
mark of the second period when sophomore Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.)
wristed in a shot from five feet in front of the net.
In the third period, Blake Stewart broke up a play at his own blueline and
broke in to score the go-ahead goal for Merrimack as the Warriors took a
2-1 lead at the 4:38 mark of the third period. Providence pressured
Merrimack but could not get the tying goal past Warrior netminder Joe
Exter. Exter made a number of strong saves to keep Merrimack in the game.
The Friars were finally able to get their second goal of the night as
Fregoe pushed in a rebound off of Stephen Wood’s blast from the point on a
power play.
Providence outshot Merrimack, 49-36. Exter finished with 47 saves and
earned the game’s No. 1 star. Goepfert also played well in net, making 34
stops for the Friars.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 23 versus Merrimack in
North Andover, Mass. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
