PROVIDENCE HOCKEY DEFEATED BY NO. 2 ST. CLOUD STATE, 5-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's ice hockey team was
defeated, 5-2, by No. 2-ranked St. Cloud State University in a non-league
contest on Saturday, January 19 at PC's Schneider Arena.
        The Friars (9-12-3 overall) scored the game's first goal, as junior
co-captain Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) collected a rebound and
fired a high shot past the Huskies' goaltender, Dean Weasler for his
team-leading 14th goal of the season. DiSalvatore's power-play tally was
assisted by junior Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) and sophomore defenseman
Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.).
        St. Cloud answered to tie the contest at 1-1 at the 13:48 mark when Mark
Hartigan scored off a Providence turnover in the defensive zone. The Huskies
opened the second period by claiming a 2-1 lead when Jeff Finger fired a
shot from the high slot that beat the Friars' junior goaltender, Nolan
Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.).
        Providence tied the contest less than two minutes later when Rask tipped a
Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) tipped shot for the game-tying goal. Wood received
the second assist as he fired the initial shot on goal that ended up being
tipped twice for the score.
        After Rask's goal, it became St. Cloud's game, as Hartigan scored his
second goal of the game on a breakaway and teammate Ryan Malone scored with
11 minutes remaining in the period to put the Huskies ahead, 4-2. SCSU's Joe
Motzko added the final tally at 8:15 of the third period for the final, 5-2,
margin.
        Schaefer made 27 saves in the loss for the Friars, while his counterpart,
SCSU's Weasler, stopped 23 in the victory.
        Providence returns to action on Tuesday, January 22 when they host Brown
University in the annual Mayor's Cup game at 7:00 p.m. at PC's Schneider Arena.
