PROVIDENCE, BOSTON UNIVERSITY, PLAY TO 5-5 TIE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's ice hockey team scored two
goals in the final 6:18 of regulation to overcome a two-goal deficit and
skate to a 5-5 tie with Boston University on Friday, January 11th at
Providence's Schneider Arena.
The Friars started the scoring in the first period when senior Peter Fregoe
(Massena, N.Y.) collected a pass from junior Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor,
Conn.) in the left circle, skated around a defender to the front of the
goal, and fired a shot over BU goaltender Sean Fields' right shoulder.
Sophomore defenseman Dominic Torretti (Ludlow, Mass.) had the second assist
on the goal, picking up his first point of the season. Providence increased
its lead to 2-0 when freshman center Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) slid a
loose puck in front of the BU net past Fields for his seventh goal of his
rookie season. The pair of PC goals to open the contest was just the third
time all season that the Friars had scored first in a game and just the
second time all season the Providence began a game with a two goal lead.
Boston University had an answer to the Friars' outburst, as the Terriers
scored the game's next three goals to take a 3-2 lead. Brian Collins beat
PC's Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) on a loose puck to start the
scoring for BU. Brian McConnell evened the score 21 seconds later when he
fired a shot past Schaefer off a Providence turnover in the defensive zone.
Finally, Justin Maiser scored on the power-play with 3:28 left to play in
the period.
The Friars were not finished scoring in the period, as DiSalvatore evened
the scored at 3-3 with 2:11 to play when he converted a man-advantage
situation with assists going to Fregoe and sophomore defenseman Stephen Wood
(Sudbury, Mass.).
The Terriers opened a two-goal lead with a pair of tallies in the second
period. Jack Baker scored at the 13:12 mark of the middle period and his
teammate Mark Mullen scored with 52 seconds remaining in the period to
increase BU's lead to two goals.
The Friars started the third period slowly, going almost 12 minutes before
getting their first shot on goal in the period. But Providence was able to
tally twice in the final six-and-a-half minutes to force overtime. Rask
scored at the 13:42 mark of the third period when he collected a loose puck
around the goal and flipped a backhanded over a prone Fields to cut the BU
lead to one goal. The score was Rask's third goal in the last four games.
DiSalvatore, tallied with 1:11 remaining in regulation for the Friars,
adding his second goal of the night and his team-leading 13th goal of the
season.
Schaefer posted his 13th game this season where he stopped 30 or more
shots, finishing with 33 saves in 65 minutes. Fields recorded 31 saves for
the Terriers.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, January 13th when they travel to
Durham, N.H. to face the New Hampshire Wildcats. Game time is 4:00 p.m. from
the Whittemore Center and the contest will be televised live on FOX Sports
New England.
