Back in the mid 80's the graduation rate at the University of Minnesota was
so poor that they started to encourage athletes to graduate.  This may have
been through continued financial assistance.  The number that comes to mind
is 28% graduated in 5 years.  Now before you think bad about the Gophers
the campus-wide graduating percentages were not much higher.  There are a
large number of people who go to school part time, or take quarters off to
work. I always thought it was an encouraging sign that athletics would look
after their own even after the department had sucked out all of their
revenue producing abilities.
