Shawn Bates' second goal of the game at 5:34 into the third period
snapped a 2-2 tie and sent #2 seed Boston University on to a 4-2 win
over #5 UMass-Lowell in the night cap of the Hockey East semi-final
doubleheader at Boston Garden. BU moves on to face upstart #6
Providence for the 11th Hockey East Championship Saturday night.
Lowell, whose NCAA Tournament hopes were dashed with the loss, will
meet Maine in the consolation game.

Bates' first of the game came late in the second period just 1:31
after Paul Botto had given UML a 2-1 lead. The River Hawks played
superbly in the upset attempt in outshooting BU over the first
two periods. But BU turned it on in the third, outshooting UML
15-8, and two defensive errors allowed the Terriers to score twice
and take the win.

BU came out strong off the opening draw and took an early lead just
24 seconds into the game when Jacques Joubert banged a puck past
Craig Lindsay from right in front for his 27th goal of the year.
The Terriers took an early 5-0 edge in shots, but UML bounced back
to outshoot BU for the period, 12-10. UML tied the game on a 4x4
later in the first when Neil Donovan nailed the rebound of Aaron
Kriss's shot.

It stayed 1-1 till late in the second, although UML was outshooting
the favored Terriers and staying with them step for step. When
Botto's shot bounced off BU D Kaj Linna and went in at 17:16 of the
period, it certainly seemed as if the upset was on. But Bates
blasted a low shot past Lindsay soon afterward to tie the game at
2-2 and set the stage for the Terriers' third period heroics.

After Bates and Chris Drury had given BU a 4-2 lead by the eight
minute mark of the third, Lowell had two big penalties do them in
in the latter half of the period. BU did not score, but they
controlled the puck and prevented Lowell from mounting much of a
serious threat.

The key to the game was that Lowell was unable to take a lead
after two despite having a good number of chances. Tom Noble
had a superb game in net for BU, and the BU D clamped down in
the third period when it had to. BU also stayed out of the box,
allowing Lowell only two power plays and killing both.

GOAL DESCRIPTIONS provided by Hockey East and NU SID Bill Doherty
BU1: Joubert, while being hammered to the ice, wrists in rebound
directly in front of Lindsay. Assist to Coleman.
UML1: Donovan cues home rebound of a 25-foot backhander through
the faceoff circles by Kriss.
UML2: Botto's shot from dead-on, 35 feet out, deflected off Linna
in heavy turbulence in front of Noble. Shot followed several swipes
at the puck by Basaraba and Dartsch, both of whom assisted on goal.
BU2: Bates cradled a lead pass from Linna, raced in on the right
wing and fired low slapper stick side low, past Lindsay.
BU3: Bates takes perfect cross ice pass from Lachance and, with
Kriss draped all over him at the right faceoff dot, redirects
pass inside near post before Lindsay can get back to the pipe.
BU4: Drury one-times a wrister past Lindsay after a goal mouth
feed by Rausch, who had made a great rush through the offensive
zone to the Lowell end line.

QUOTES
UMASS-LOWELL HEAD COACH BRUCE CROWDER
"I can't fault our effort out there tonight. We played hard. I
thought we played with guts and pride, we just didn't get some
breaks that you need.

"Their third goal was the one goal that really did the damage.
It was a nonchalant play but also a nice play by Bates who played
well for them tonight. I can't fault our guys defensively, I
thought we covered them well. They just made some outstanding
plays, especially Bates.

"Craig Lindsay played well for us down the stretch and made some
big saves tonight. I also think that BU received solid play from
their guy tonight in goal. We had some opportunities but he came
up with the big play."

(No more quotes from this game, it was late.)
