A query for all NC$$ hockey gurus:

In many sports, like the NFL or college hoops, the law of averages dictates
that it is very difficult for one team to beat another team three times
in the same season. This theory brings up an interesting situation
concerning the ECAC semis in Lake Placid this weekend.

Clarkson has defeated Princeton in both meetings this year, by counts of
9-1 and 6-3. Colgate has defeated RPI in their two contests this season
also, by scores of 6-3 and 3-0. So, would this give an advantage to the
lower-seeded Tigers and Engineers?

I think this would be a minor concern to Mark Morris (Clarkson) and Don
Vaughn (Colgate). Even with the way Clarkson seems to be putting things
together, Princeton could still come out of nowhere. The same holds true
for RPI. Both teams had rough outings during the final weekend of the
regular season, but that just might be to their advantages. Princeton
dominated Union in the prelim round. Then they showed a lot of character,
IMO, in coming back in Game 1 against Brown, playing them tough in Game 2,
and outlasting them in a hard-fought double OT Game 3 victory. Of course,
they may be tired, too! :-)

As far as RPI is concerned, who the hell can figure them out! You have to
be wary of them, though. They have an excellent group of seniors that
desperately wanted to get to Lake Placid. I'm talking about people
like Kelly Askew, Wayne Clarke, Craig Hamelin, etc. They'll do whatever
it takes to win.

What we have to remember is what Lake Superior St. did last year. For a
team to come out of nowhere, they need the right combination of talent,
leadership, and coaching. Not to mention the desire.

So, can RPI finally beat Colgate? Can Princeton salvage one against Clarkson?

Opinions welcome....
