Sunday afternoon at Bright Hockey Center the Big Red of Cornell did the
double by beating the Harvard Crimson 2-4 in an Ivy League match.
Cornell played very well as a team and used good puck movement to win the
game. Harvard played as a group of individuals and never got going today.

In the first period, Big Red opened the scoring with a power play goal
when Ginger Page's (Janna Dewar) point shot found net at the far post.
The play was made by first-year forward Dewar who held unto the puck long
enough to make the play. Christine Stewart (Jennifer Wilson, Page) gave
Cornell a 0-2 lead when she roofed her shot after a nice 1-2 break in
play. In the second, Harvard came back with a power play goal when Stacy
Kellogg (Christa Calagione, AJ Mleczko) was given a nice setup right in
front of goal. Cornell got its own power play goal to make the score 1-3
when Wilson (Leanna House, Kelvey Richards) knocked home a rebound after
a shot from the point. From the ensuing face-off, Big Red extended their
lead when Erin Schmalz (Tracey Cornell, Dewar) finished off a play out of
the corner. In the final period, Cornell decided to protect their 1-4
lead with tons of fore-checking, which naturally lead to Harvard closing
the gap. AJM (Kellogg) drilled home a shot from the high slot. The
Crimson tried to keep up the pressure, but Big Red hung on to a well
earned victory.

Coach Julie Andeberhan (Harvard '88) has a team with much less skill than
a number I have seen, playing very well as a team. They know what they
are suppose to do, get their heads up, and make the good pass. The
skating is starting to improve and Cornell looks to be a team on the
rise. The key to today's win was excellent puck movement. The woman of
the match was Janna Dewar. A big forward who can move, and likes to take
the puck right up the gut. Dewar also showed show very good
back-checking picking up some of Harvard's big guns and closing them
down. The line of Schmalz, Dewar and Cornell had a great game. They
were up and down the ice and used each other very well. The line of
Stewart, Wilson and Richards also played very strong. On defense I
thought Page, House and especially Stacey Hutton play extremely well.
They did not panic, were able to hold on to the puck, and made the easy
break out play. In goal, Sarah Brewster had a good match stopping
Harvard shots. Overall, Cornell is developing into a strong team.

Harvard did not play well today. With the lack of skill development you
can't expect a whole lot of progress. Too many players are out there
just doing their own thing and not thinking as a team. The three players
who did play together were on the third line. Calagione, Jenny Duval and
Lauren Turner played well as a unit. Calagione came close to scoring
several times. Duval and Turner both showed some good skating and
checking. AJM actually played very well today killing penalties. She
used her reach and internal drive to help clear the zone several times.
Overall, this will not go down as one of the better efforts the Crimson
Women have put forth.
