The Big Red journeyed to Detroit to participate in the Great Lakes Invita-
tional and came away with a pair of rather decisive losses, 9-4 to Michigan
State in the first round and 7-3 to Michigan Tech in the consolation. The
games were similar in at least one aspect: both nights, Cornell stayed
close through two periods, entering the second intermission down by only one

Notes:

This is pretty much culled from the newspaper report and a summary sent
along by Glen Keeney, since I wasn't able to make the trip out and the GLI
games were not on radio or TV in the Ithaca area. (You know you're in
trouble when you call up the station asking them if they are planning on
broadcasting the Cornell hockey game, and they say, "The what?")

Anyway, Michigan State jumped out quickly, building a 3-0 lead in the first
fourteen minutes of the game. Dean Sylvester opened the scoring at 3:05 of
the first period, after Steve Suk won a faceoff in the Cornell end and found
him alone in the slot. Jon Gaskins then notched one at the 6:18 mark,
beating goaltender Jason Elliott with a high shot from the faceoff circle.
Rem Murray slapped one home at 13:33, and it looked like the Spartans were
going to cruise.

But Geoff Lopatka got the Big Red comeback started with 5:01 left in the
first, deflecting a Bill Holowatiuk blast behind Michigan State goalie Mike
Buzak. Then it was Tyler McManus striking for a pair of power-play tallies
in the second period to tie the score. At the 6:08 mark, McManus got his
stick on a Brad Chartrand shot, tipping it into the Spartan net. Sixty-six
seconds later, McManus beat Buzak with a slapper from the faceoff circle,
and the game was tied at 3-3.

The Spartans retook the lead on a goal by Anson Carter at 13:34 of the
second. Carter got control of the puck in the corner and sent it over to
Murray, whose one-timer was blocked by Elliott. Carter followed up the
rebound, however, knocking it into the open net. Despite the one-goal
deficit, Cornell appeared to be in control of a pretty chippy game, but the
nationally-ranked Spartans woke up in the third period, outshooting the Big
Red 21-5 and putting up four unanswered goals. Murray got things going 50
seconds in with a quick wrister from deep in the slot, and then Carter
intercepted a Holowatiuk clearing attempt and broke in alone on Elliott,
beating him low at the 3:38 mark. Mike Watt made it 7-3 at 5:59, and then
Carter completed his hat trick with 9:39 left, wristing one over Elliott's
shoulder. Defenseman Steve Wilson got the Big Red's fourth goal at 14:55 of
the third, and Sylvester closed out the scoring with his second of the game
with 3:59 remaining.

Elliott wound up stopping 42 of 51 shots, while Buzak had a somewhat easier
time of it, finishing with 23 saves.

[Oops... hope this doesn't duplicate Walt Olsen's post too much...]

The Big Red stayed close for 40 minutes but fell victim to Michigan Tech
forward Brent Peterson, whose third-period natural hat trick sparked the
Huskies to the consolation win. Right wing Tyler McManus opened the scoring
for Cornell at 11:52 of the first period, snapping a loose puck past Husky
goalie Luciano Caravaggio for his third goal of the tournament. Michigan
Tech fought back quickly with a pair of goals just over two minutes apart.
Pat Mikesch threaded a pass to Randy Stevens as Stevens was heading toward
the Cornell net, and the senior forward one-timed the puck past goaltender
Eddy Skazyk at the 13:45 mark. Brett Meyers, one of the Huskies who had
been suspended for the previous night's game, gave Michigan Tech the lead
with 4:05 left in the first, hacking the puck past Skazyk from the edge of
the crease.

Jake Karam tied the score at the 17:25 mark, when his slapper from the blue
line eluded Caravaggio. Cornell picked up the pace in the middle period,
outshooting the Huskies 12-5, but they were unable to get the puck past
Caravaggio -- in fact, Michigan Tech picked up the only goal of the second
period, at the 9:18 mark. Skazyk got his skate on a shot by Meyers, but
Austin Kryzer got to the rebound and flipped it into the open net.

Andre Savage made it 4-2 in MTU's favor when he fired home a Stevens pass
2:04 into the third period. Then Peterson took over, converting a power-
play at 3:33, picking up his second goal at 10:30, and finishing off his hat
trick 98 seconds later with another man-up tally. Geoff Lopatka closed the
gap a bit for the Big Red, scoring with 1:25 left in the third. The Big
Red's frustration finally boiled over late in the game, as Jason Kendall and
Matt Cooney got into a skirmish with MTU's Savage and Travis Van Tighem,
resulting in double minors all around with one second remaining.

Skazyk stopped 29 shots, and Caravaggio recorded 26 saves. The Big Red next
takes on Torpedo Yaroslavl in an exhibition game Tuesday night at Lynah
Rink.
