As much as I hate to (I am a UMaine fan, you know), I have to admit that
McKersie and Herlofsky were pretty good for BU last year (I did see them
mentioned in another post on goalie tandems, try an earlier post on this
subject). I did happen to notice that no one mentioned the tandem of Mike
Dunham and Garth Snow at Maine in 92-93. When Maine was outscoring its
opponents by an average of 8-3 that year, these two posted GAAs of close
to 2.00, and save percentages of close to .900. It might also be added that
it may have been Garth's style of play that may have saved the Black Bears'
butts in the NCAA championship game that year, as Lake Superior couldn't
use their trademark dump-and-chase game. When Dunham was in there, the
Maine defensemen knew they could depend on him to do his job of keeping the
puck out of the net, while they did their job of clearing opposing forwards
out of the area in front of the Maine goal. When Garth was in there, the Maine
offense got going at a fever pace. Garth's style usually meant a goal or two
extra in the opponents' net for Maine. Even Brian Rolston of LSSU mentioned,
when he and Garth were teammates in the Olympics, that if it hadn't been for
Garth, the Lakers may have been celebrating back-to-back titles, and proving
the western juggernaut was still intact. These two sure made UMaine's tandem
of the "Blair Brothers" pale by comparison in 93-94.
It does help to have a great tandem of goaltenders. I'm a bit afraid of what
will happen next year if Noble matures, and McKersie gets back. If McKersie
can get back to half the form he was before the accident, he'll be a force
to be reckoned with, and he could duke it out for all-HE honors with the
likes of Allison and Taylor again.
