The Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth took three out of four
points from the University of Wisconsin Badgers this weekend, in Madison,
WI.(We still use the traditional point method ;-)) Goaltender Taras Lendzyk
stopped 84 shots for a .944 save percentage this weekend. In his last 4
games, Taras has a 2.00 GAA and a .944 save percentage while going 3-0-1 as
the Bulldogs moved into a second place tie with the Badgers. (Temporarily,
depending on CC vs. UAA today and the fact that UMD and UW have played one
more game) The Dogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period,
despite the fact Wisconsin seemed to be dominant. The Bulldogs also blew
a big power play opportunity in the first as a 5 minute major was called
on Darren Haley for checking from behind (A questionable call, not the
penalty itself, but 5 minutes over 2 minutes) but the Bulldogs were
thoroughly outplayed for the first 2 and a half minutes, and then got a
penalty of their own to negate the power play. The teams were a combined
3 of 27 on the power play this weekend (11.1%). The Badgers had a 5 on 3
for about 33 seconds late in the first, but couldn't capitalize on it.
The Badgers spent almost 7 and a half minutes straight on the power play
from 17:37 of the first to 5:09 of the second except for 21 seconds of
that time, but didn't get a goal out of it. There were some great saves
and some great plays, like the second UMD goal, wher Chet Culic had a
perfect drop pass to Rod Aldoff in the slot and he put away his first of
two power play goals on the night. But, for the most part, I would say
UW dominated the major part of this game. UMD's last goal was very
controversial, as Brad Peluso pulled down a Badger, no call was made,
Fitzgerald picked up the puck and got it to Federenko who slipped it
through Daubenspeck's legs for a 4-2 lead and the eventual game winner.
Two easy goals were scored, the first UMD goal was shot from just outside
the blue line and somehow found it's way in, and Lendzyk slowed one down
with his legs, but it kept going between them and trickled in. The
Bulldogs face the Wildcats of Northern Michigan next weekend in Marquette.
