There have to be people on this list who know more about this
subject than myself, but I haven't seen a complete post and therefore
will make this attempt.

The basic drill is: when the official is ready, visitor's stick on the
ice first, followed closely by the home stick. The sticks must not be
in the dot or to the side. Feet must also be clearly planted in back of
the dot, one can't be advanced to the side of the dot. All of this,
of course, is subject to jockeying and shading to gain advantage. How much
of that is permitted is subject to the individual official's whim. The
most common reasons for getting tossed are not getting the stick on the ice
when and where the offical wants it, and of course, blatant "jumping the gun".
In some levels of hockey (AHAUS for one, not sure about the NCAA) the face-of
man can also be tossed for encroachment by a teammate into the face-off
circle or across the hash marks before the puck is dropped. In no cases
should the official "fake" the dropping of the puck unless he
sees something at the last instant that he doesn't like.
