Union opens the regular season tomorrow night, hosting Army at
Achilles Rink at 7:30 PM. Union replaced Army in the ECAC last
season. The Dutchmen are coming off a 3-21-1 season in their first
year of Division I play.
Today also marks the 4th anniversary of Union's upset win over RPI to
open the 1988-89 season. It was the first collegiate game for the
talented class of 1992, with freshman Tim Cregan scoring in overtime
to take a 4-3 win. Union never led until the overtime goal, having
trailed by scores of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 before tying the game on a late
score with goaltender Ron Kinghorn on the bench for the extra skater.
In my mind, it remains the greatest hockey game I've ever seen, with
only last season's upset at Cornell even coming close.
