> OSLO, Norway - The WCHA All-Star Team completed an impressive three-game
>sweep on its Norway Tour 2000 here Saturday (Aug. 19) evening when they
>blitzed past host Valerenga IF, 10-2, at the Ungdomshallen in Oslo. Eight
>different players scored goals for the all-stars, led by two off the stick
>of Mark Cullen.
>  As this game was the most difficult challenge of the tour for the
>all-stars - Valerenga IF is the defending Norwegian champion - getting off
>to a good start was a key. And with just 1:07 elapsed in the first period,
>Mike Scott finished off a segment of top-notch board work in the offensive
>zone by Bjorn Engstrom and Derk Derow to give them a quick spark.
>  Valerenga then capitalized on a back-to-back penalties against the WCHA
>team, knotting the score at 1-1 on a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 4:14. But
>that was to be the last time the game was tied, as the rest of the evening
>belonged to the WCHA All-Stars.
>  Following Scott's early tally, Jesse Rooney and Mark Cullen also scored
>first period goals, with Cullen's coming on a power-play with just two
>seconds remaining.
>  Early in the second period, Valerenga again took advantage of penalties
>when Patrik Englund scored his club's second power-play goal of the game
>with 2:24 elapsed. With the lead at 3-2, Valerenga was on the prowl,
>gunning for the tieing goal and a chance to swing the momentum their way.
>  But three consecutive minor penalties against Valerenga over the next
>1:05 gave the WCHA All-Stars a golden opportunity and they cashed in with
>a power-play goal from Bryan Lundbohm at 6:30 followed by a rink-long dash
>and goal by Kelly Popadynetz just :33 seconds later, staking the all-stars
>to a 5-2 advantage.
>  WCHA penalty-killers then came to the front, fighting off consecutive
>minors at 8:41 and 10:02 and putting a serious hurt on Valerenga's hopes
>for a comeback.
>  John Pohl then managed to top off a very strong second period for the
>all-stars with a power-play goal at 15:19, set up by Jeff Dessner and Erik
>Westrum - who marked three assists in the game.
>  In the third period, the WCHA All-Stars scored four more unanswered
>goals, coming from Steve Cygan at 0:56, Paul Cabana at 3:10, Mark Cullen
>at 8:09, and Tyler Arnason at 19:56 to make the final score, 10-2.
>  The WCHA All-Stars' three victories over their Norwegian opponents over
>the past week amounted to a 22-3 goal differential. They defeated the
>Lillehammer Hockey Club, 5-0, on Aug. 16, downed Frisk Asker, 7-1, on Aug.
>18, and then blasted past Valerenga IF, 10-2. They peformed brilliantly,
>playing stingy defense, utilizing standout goaltending from the likes of
>Karl Goehring, Graham Melanson and Scott Meyer, and putting on an
>offensive show to the tune of an average of seven+ goals per game.
>  When the WCHA All-Stars first gathered in Minneapolis for three days of
>training camp at Mariucci Arena before departing for Norway on Aug. 12,
>who would have expected them to come back home with three such dominating
>performances?
>  The answer? 24 players did and three coaches did.
>  We are tremendously proud of what these outstanding student-athletes
>accomplished as a group representing ten different universities. And now,
>the great tradition of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association will
>include another successful chapter - this time in international
