On Tuesday Linda Lord and Jamie Ritter came to visit in Auburn. The
purpose of their meeting was to gather local legislators and talk with
them about what the State Library does to support local libraries and
the legislature. We had 6 out of the 9 members of the Lewiston/Auburn
delegation in attendance. Rick Speer from Lewiston PL and I talked
about what the various services (van delivery, MSLN, MARVEL, Minerva,
professional development, and more) mean to our own libraries and the
libraries throughout the State. We also talked about how our libraries
collaborate. We had members of our boards there and it was informative
for them, too.
The feedback from the meeting has been overwhelmingly positive. One
legislator told a staff member that he had no idea of all that the State
Library does. In fact, Linda and Jamie were able to announce that
legislators can now have easy access to MSL for early morning meetings
and research. They were thrilled with that for a number of reasons.
They were so impressed overall.
Given the success of this meeting and what it means for MSL to create a
positive image for them and libraries, I am urging all libraries to try
to get their legislators together for a visit from Linda. It was great
that we were able to do it collaboratively. It wasn't that hard to
coordinate either. I sent emails to the legislators and followed up
with phone calls.
Best,
Mamie
