The City of South Portland, a forward thinking community of 25,000 located on Casco Bay is currently seeking a dynamic, friendly, patron-centered individual to join our team as a Full Time (37.5 hours weekly) Library Assistant, within our Youth Services department, with a focus on providing services to our youngest users.
Position Summary: The Library Assistant position will be primarily responsible for delivering high quality library services to our birth to five years old audience, with awareness of and adherence to the tenets of librarianship and intellectual freedom as articulated by the American Library Association. Duties will include library collection development and maintenance, programming and events as well as direct customer service. This position is based out of our main library location, but may involve work hours at our smaller branch location as well.
Supervision Received/ Exercised: This position reports to the Library's Youth Services Librarian. This position may occasionally supervise Library Aides, and volunteers.
Work schedule will include regular evening and weekend hours. The selected candidate must have the ability to demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills and communicate effectively both written and verbally.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Experience: Three (3) years of public library or related experience required. Experience with Innovative Interface's Sierra LSP strongly preferred. Excellent computer skills, the ability to learn new systems and applications and a fun, innovative attitude are a must.

Starting Salary Range: $23.19 - $26.43/hour ($45,220.76 - $51,538.76 annually) depending on experience. This position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
