I heard through the grapevine that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will be distributing the "2016 Endangered and Threatened Species Poster" to schools and public libraries.
The description of the poster:
"This beautiful new poster depicts the 51 native fish and wildlife species endangered or threatened in Maine. There is identification key, plus additional habitat and background information about each species on the back of the poster. All proceeds from the sale of the poster will go directly to the Endangered and Nongame Wildlife Fund for endangered and threatened species (E/T) recovery in Maine. Maine wildlife biologist, talented artist and writer Mark McCollough created the newest 2016 E/T art, in conjunction with the 6th update to the Maine's List of Endangered and Threatened Species. Arranging the species in the shape of our State and in the general locations in which they are found - a real challenge to the artist - you'll see puffin feet dabbling in cold Downeast waters, a short-eared owl cruising across the rooftop of Maine, and a northern long-eared bat hibernating in a mine in the mountains of western Maine."
A Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund (MOHF) grant was secured in the spring of 2016 to mail a poster and a teacher activity and information packet to every 4th grade teacher and all 266 public library in the state. Because 4th grade most often includes a Maine studies unit, and teachers and their students alike are so interested in Endangered Species as a topic, the MOHF enthusiastically and unanimously approved this grant proposal! Posters were mailed out at the end of August, in time to land on teacher's desks in late September. We hope teachers will have the time to provide feedback on the poster and how they used the materials via a 'survey monkey' analysis. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EndangeredSpeciesPoster
MOHF is derived from the sale of conservation instant-scratch lottery tickets, and also provides an important source of 'State' funding for E/T conservation."
