Friday evening at Bright Harvard played a slow grinding game to
eventually beat the Bowdoin Polar Bears. Bowdoin's star player Nan
Gorton was injured in the second period, and without her the match
turned uneventful.

In the first period Gorton scored an unassisted goal after intercept-
ing two defensive clearing attempts. On the second heads up play,
she waited and tucked her drive into the lower corner of the net.
Excellent play by her! Harvard tied the match up when Joey Alissi
(AJ Mleczko, Stacy Kellogg) managed to shove the puck in after a pile
up in front of the Polar Bear net. Kellogg (Alissi, Francie Walton)
took the lead for the Crimson when she finished off a nice 2 on 1
break with a shot off the goalie. In the second period Harvard made
it 3-1 on a power play goal by Alissi (Holly Leitzes). The goal was
made by the power of the shot from the point. AJ Mleczko (Alissi,
Leitzes) put in a slap shot from the slot just after another Crimson
power play had elapsed. In the final period, AJ's (Alissi, Colleen
Malek) wrist shot found the far side high corner of the goal, on the
opening rush. Harvard made it 6-1 when AJ (Alissi, Leitzes) had the
easy put in after a series of shots and rebounds. Diana Clark (Kate
Schutt, Lauren Turner) finished off a break-in when she steered in a
shot/pass. AJ (Kellogg, Alissi) scored again off a 3 on 1 break,
which has highlighted by a pretty 3-way passing play. The Crimson
finished the scoring at 9-1 when Ellen Frump (Jennifer Duval, Schutt)
roofed her shot, after much pressure in the Polar Bear zone.

Bowdoin had a tough game. Nan Gorton is a very special player. She
reads the play so well and is the driving force on the team. Gorton
would make any team a better team. On defense Dee Spagnuolo had a
nice shot from the point. She was also good at clearing her own zone.
Michel Phaneuf showed some good skating with her rushes. Overall,
a team with promise.

Harvard played a slow, boring game. The match would have been a good
time to perfect styles of play. Instead, players tried to pad stats.
That will not help them when they have to play the big teams. First-
year player Colleen Malek had an excellent game on defense. She
settles things down well in her own zone. She is good at making the
simple play and moving the puck. Harvard's second line of Christa
Calagione, Clark and Megan Hall is making real progress. They played
the most like a line. They actually did put in some effort to build
better teamwork in this match.

I was again highly disappointed by a cross-check to a players head.
This time, Nan Gorton was injured and did not return to the game.
Normally women's hockey is very clean. Both the NU/PC match, and
this match had ugly scenes in it. Both times the refs. saw it,
but called nothing. I feel when there is intent to injure, the mini-
mun penalty should be a 5 minute major. In this case a game mis-
conduct seemed closer to being right. Another Harvard defender had
run Gorton into the goal post in the first period. Theoretically I
support both the teams who committed the fouls, but I feel they should
be punished. I hope Nan Gorton is ok!?
