=============================================================================

People hearing the score might have thought this was an exciting game...
and maybe it was for St. Cloud fans... but I thought it was ugly, not
exciting. (Of course, I am influenced by the fact that it seemed to be
the end of a long week....)

Anyway, Wisconsin played terribly. They weren't playing particularly
smart, the weren't making their passes, they kept getting caught in
their own zone.... but they did win, and I expect a much better game
tonight.

St. Cloud played hard, especialy considering that they also had a
terrible week and several injuries. On the way back to St. Cloud from
Madison last monday (by bus), they got caught in a snow storm. In
practice Wednesday, defenseman Jordy Wingate separated his shoulder. Ten
seconds before that, Huskie forward Tony Gruba lacerated his ankle, and
he wasn't expected to play (he did, and got a goal and two assists).

Wisconsin scored on 3 powerplays -- none of them setup, but intead by
jumping on St. Cloud mistakes, as was the game winner.

Jon Michellizi did not have a great night in the nets, but he came up
big several times, including two early St. Cloud breakaways.

At 9:12 of the first period, with Wisconsin already on a powerplay,
St. Cloud's Gronborg was called (for holding?). Instead of turning over
the puck and getting a longer 5-on-3, Wisconsin went the extra attacker,
and seemed to score. The replay showed that the puck hit on the inside
of the far post, and looked over the line. Referee Jim Berlew didn't see
it that way (he never gave the wave-off either, but his arm was in the
air on the delayed call). Instead, he wistled the penalty when Sjerven
covered the rebound. Wisconsin didn't argue too much, and scored after
the first penalty expired.

In the second period, Brett Kurtz seemed to have a Badger goal when he
hit a low-angle shot from the right, behind the goalie, and off both
posts. The goal judge put the light on, but play continued. Berlew was
at the other end of the rink, watching two skaters untangle behind the
Badger net, and didn't see anything. At the next whistle, he did ask the
goal judge what happened, and ruled no goal.

Two Badger goals were very pretty -- Moore scored early in the third on
a nice pass from Brett Kurtz above the top of the circle. Moore was
being dumped as he went toward the net, and extended his stick to tap in
the puck behind Sjerven, who had left the entire net empty as he went
out anticipating a shot from Kurtz.

Doug Macdonalds goal, giving Wisconsin a short-lived 5-4 lead, was
similar. Jason Zent got the puck about 15 feet to Sjerven's left, and
fed a very nice, soft pass to Macdonald waiting at the right top of the
crease. Again, Sjerven had committed, and had no hope. In the past, Zent
woudl have probably taken the shot, not the pass.

Kelly Farichild's game winner came as the Badgers applied forechecking
pressure, something they hadn't done much of earlier in the game. Three
Huskies were just inside their blue line, bringing the puck out.
Fairchild, the fourth line center, forced a the Huskies to pass to the
right side, and then pressured Chic Pojar (a forward converted to
defense because of Wingate's injury), who wiffed on the clearing pass.
Fairchild crossed toward center and down the slot, firing a low wrist
shot between Sjerven's pads.
