CAN YOU SAY SWEEP? IN HOUGHTON, INDEED YOU CAN!
MTU Downs ECAC Power St. Lawrence 4-1 To Post 1st Season-Opening
Sweep Since '93-94
Houghton, Mich. -- It was back in 1993-94 that the Michigan Tech
hockey team last swept an opponent to open the season. Until now that
is.
Behind two assists from sophomore Brett Engelhardt, and a solid
28-save performance from junior Brian Rogers, Michigan Tech picked up
a 4-1 victory over visiting St. Lawrence and gained a sweep of the
weekend series. Tech won 3-1 Friday night.
"It's a good feeling, it really is," said Tech ice boss Mike Sertich.
"We're played hungry and I thought we did a lot of good things. I'm
happy for our fans too. They were really great."
Tech, which outshot the visitors 42-29, got off to a 1-0 lead on
freshman Colin Murphy's power play goal with just 2:11 left in the
opening stanza. St. Lawrence tied the game at 8:05 of period two, but
just 1:43 later, sophomore Jon Pittis banged one home on a rebound
and the Huskies led for good.
Tech would make it 3-1 as Brett Engelhardt's shot from the left point
deflected off Bryan Perez into the net at 16:19 of the second.
The final goal came with just :01 left as Chris Durno made no mistake
upon burying the back of an empty net while the Huskies were
shorthanded.
Tech will take its 2-0-0 record to St. Cloud State on Friday and
Saturday (Oct. 19-20) as the Huskies open the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association portion of their schedule.
