HUSKIES SWEEP MAVERICKS, TAKE FOURTH IN THE WCHA -  The St. Cloud State
women's hockey team earned four points this past weekend by sweeping
MSU-Mankato.  The double victories gave SCSU one more point than Ohio State
to place them fourth in the WCHA.  St. Cloud State finished the regular
season at 17-15-2 overall, 12-10-2 in the conference.  The Huskies played
game one of the series at the All-Season's Arena in Mankato.  The Mavericks
jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period.  Both teams went scoreless
in the second period, but the sticks were hot for St. Cloud State in the
third stanza as they scored four consecutive goals to win the game, 4-2.
The Mavericks struck first on Saturday on a power play, but sophomore
forward Amanda Mathison tied the game at 19:18 to end the first period.
MSU took the lead again scoring 36 seconds into the second period, until
sophomore forward Abby Cooper (Washington, MI) netted her 10th goal of the
season to tie the game at 2-2.  First-year forward Ricki-Lee Doyle
(Calgary) scored the game winning goal at 14:25 in the second period.  Kobi
Kawamoto (Surrey, B.C) and Amanda Mathison (Newport) netted the remaining
two goals for SCSU to give them a 5-2 victory.

HEAD COACH: Kerry Brodt Wethington is in her third season as the head coach
for the women's hockey program at St. Cloud State. She joined the staff in
1998-99, and is the first women's hockey coach in the history of the
program at SCSU Brodt Wethington is a 1995 graduate of SCSU. She is also a
coach for the U.S. Community Olympic Development Program for girls ice
hockey and the founder and director of the Skater's Link Hockey Clinic. In
the first two seasons of the program, Brodt-Wethington has compiled a
21-31-5 record with the Huskies.

ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF: David Prokop is the first-ever assistant coach
hired for the SCSU women's hockey team. He joined the staff in1998-99, and
since that time has been one of the team's top recruiters.  Prokop
graduated with a bachelors degree from Concordia College in Moorhead Jean
Vaillancourt joined the staff at SCSU in 1999-2000. He brings a varied
hockey background to the SCSU program, having coached both men and women in
Ontario. Vaillancourt earned a degree in Human Kinetics form the University
of Ottawa in 1997.

2000-01 TEAM CAPTAINS: The team captains for the 2000-01 season are junior
defenders Tara McNamara and assistant captain Katy Battis.

THE OPPONENTS: Through nine meetings against the Ohio State Buckeyes, the
series is tied at 4-4-1.  SCSU played host to the Buckeyes Feb. 24-25.  The
Huskies lost both games, 0-2, 0-4.  SCSU swept the Buckeyes earlier this
season on Dec. 8-9.  The Buckeyes (16-15-3, 11-10-3 WCHA) are led by
first-year defenders Kelli Halcisak (13-25=38), Emma Laaksonen (17-19=36),
and sophomore forward Shana Frost (20-14=34).  Guarding the net for the
Buckeyes is sophomore April Stojak (16-15-3).  The coach for Ohio State is
Jackie Barto.  Barto led the Buckeyes to an 8-26-3 record in their first
year.  OSU placed 4th in the WCHA last year with a 6-15-3 record..

SCSU CONFERENCE RANKINGS:  Doyle, Stang and McLeod continue to lead the
Huskies in almost every scoring category in the conference.  In 24 league
games played, Doyle is third in the WCHA in points scored (20-24=44) and
McLeod is eighth (8-27=35).  Roxy Stang is fifth in goals scored (22), and
right behind her is Doyle with 20 goals.  McLeod is tied in for first in
the conference in assists (27); not far behind is Doyle in sixth place with
24 assists.  Doyle is ranked second in power play points (10-8=18) and
first in power play goals (10).  Leading the defense in scoring is McLeod
(8-27=35), and Kawamoto (10-15=25) is currently in fifth.  Goalie Laura
Gieselman is fourth in the conference in saves percentage (.895)

HUSKY INFO:   Junior defender and assistant captain Katy Battis (W. St.
Paul) returned to action January 5 against Niagara after missing 14 games
with a grade 2 MCL strain which she suffered Oct. 20 against
MSU-Mankato Amanda Mathison also returned to the Huskies line-up after
being sidelined since Nov. 10 with a head injury Sophomore forward Kirsten
Olson has transferred to Gustavus Adulphus for the spring semester The
Huskies earned their first wins of the 2000-2001 season with double wins on
Oct. 20-21 against MSU-Mankato, 5-1 and 6-1 two current SCSU players have
played all three season of Husky hockey - Tara McNamara and Sondra
Diaz-Arntzen.  McNamara has appeared in all 88 of the games played at St.
Cloud State in almost three full seasons.

1999-2000 SEASON WRAP: Finishing atop the scoring chart for SCSU was
sophomore forward Fiona McLeod, who scored 18 goals and 12 assists for 30
points in 1999-2000.  McLeod's 30 points makes her the all-time leading
scorer in the short history of SCSU women's hockey Finishing just behind
McLeod in scoring was first-year forward Jennifer Swanson who tallied 11
goals and 18 assists for 29 points Other leading scorers for SCSU were
sophomore Amanda Presenger (8-10=18), first-year forward Abby Cooper
(9-6=15), first-year forward Erin McNamara (7-10=17), and junior forward
Rachel Denner (9-4=13) The Huskies leading goaltender for the 1999-2000
season was first-year athlete Laura Gieselman, whose play could be deemed
nothing short of brilliant.
