- Is anyone else surprised that if the NC$$ tournament were held today only
*one* team (UNH) of the field of twelve (I know, I know, PWR and League
Tourney results dictate the teams, but bear with me :-) would have played
a schedule amongst the top quarter in the country ?? So far, the Wildcats
have played the toughest schedule in the nation, but no one else ranked in
the RPI Top Twelve is in single digits for this (strength of scdedule, i.
e., opp%) category !! UND is next at #12, but sheesh - look at Miami at
#41 (who of course ignored the numbers and outplayed UNH in the Denver Cup
Championship :-)
- Posted before BU's loss at #20 Princeton and UNH's victory at #45 UNO, will
the numbers crunch to move UNH into the Top Spot, or will they simply
tread water ?? Will UNH's victory vs. UNO even be included in the RPI
calculation ?? Is losing to a higher ranked team better than winning vs.
a lower (in this case, dead-last) ranked team ?? Time will tell ....
- I've watched MSU (in person at the Ice Breaker Tournament, and via TV in
the GLI), so I don't question that they're a fine team despite an opp% rank
of only #31. But sub-0.500 (at the time) LSSU certainly exposed the truth
in Yale's #32 opp% ranking at the RPI Holiday Tournament ....

> 16 Northeastern 17 10- 5- 2 64.71 (13) 45.26 (39) 51.77 (10) 53.04
- N'eastern may be the media darlings right now (and lead HEA as January
rolls around - who woulda thunk it) but they've yet to play any of the
iron in HE (as their #39 rank in opp% will attest) and the next few weeks
will be *very* interesting for the young, over-achieving Huskies ....
Notre Dame has also hung in there and done well playing through the third
toughest DivI schedule; does the road get a mite easier for the Irish as
the calendar turns ?? And how will CC fare in their new Arena ??

> 20 Princeton 13 7- 3- 3 65.38 (12) 43.58 (40) 47.41 (40) 51.79
- Princeton will certainly move up after knocking off top-rated BU at Hobey
Baker rink (has this ever happened to the Tigers before ??) and Ohio State
is perhaps poised to make some noise in the CCHA. Will off-ice problems
come back to haunt the Black Bears ?? They're in the midst of a brutal
schedule of home/away games vs. UNH, BU and BC, and can ill afford to lose
focus (and players) in the coming weeks ....
> 36 St Lawrence 14 2-11- 1 17.86 (43) 58.01 ( 2) 47.78 (38) 42.42
- It doesn't get any easier for the Saints .... Fresh off two gritty, but
losing efforts in the GLI, SLU returns home to Appleton Arena to face --
14-4-1 New Hampshire. Eric Heffler's double shut-out weekend must seem
like a lifetime ago for the Saints, as despite continuing to play
reasonably well since - most certainly vs. Michigan in the GLI - SLU is
winless over their last 6 games. Will home cookin' get his shut-out
juices flowing again ?? This 'Cat fan hopes not, but is worried .... :-)
Here's hopin' everyone had a safe and happy Holiday Season !!
Cheers from the Chesapeake - Jim
