Troy Taylor spouted:
>The ivies all claim this, but how much of it is really true. "Need based
>financial aid," What this means to all of us outside the ivies? I think
>it means need based in some of the ivies that they need you for athletic
>reasons so therefore you "NEED" financial aid..

Financial aid at the eight Ivy League schools (only six of which play
varsity hockey, as you know) is need-based only. This does not mean that
athletes are not recruited, and this does not mean that varsity athletes
are not eligible for financial aid at all.

What it means is that all students who have financial need, athletes and
non-athletes, submit financial aid applications. All of the students -
athletes and non-athletes - are treated EQUALLY through the use of complex,
but standardized, formulas by which the schools calculate financial aid
packages. These formulas take into account parent income & assets, student
income & assets, and number of children in each family attending college at
the time. Academic performance and athletic ability are NEVER used to
determine aid.

Troy and anyone else wishing to challenge that assertion are more than
welcome to check those facts with any of the eight Ivy financial aid
offices or the independent firms that audit them - or to take up the issue
with Cornellian goalie Parris Duffus, who left to play professionally when
it became apparent that his parents could not afford to send both him and
his sister to college simultaneously.
